Unicorn Cupcakes

I made these cupcakes for a 5 year old's birthday party. It was the most amazing unicorn party that ever was, they even had a real* live unicorn for the kids to ride on.

I did not make the cake, but I made ears and the horn to stick into it (so it matched the cupcakes). It was a giant cupcake and it looked so cute!

36 vanilla cupcakes with vanilla frosting

I had to space out my work days because the fondant took time to dry and harden before painting the gold on. I used Cupcake Jemma's tutorial for these, this is not my design. Working with the gold luster dust was a lot of fun!

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. I cannot stress that enough! I use a lot of new techniques/materials in every project I try, and it is so important to practice and keep going. You can see the shape and consistency improve just in the six horns I made! The second-to-last horn was the one we ended up using.

my first horn looks like one of those twisted lollipops!

Luckily for my daughter, Bea, I usually end up with a lot of extra supplies. This means that she gets to play around and bake with me. My heart fluttered and I couldn't be more proud of the unicorn cupcake she did.

Bea poured the batter herself, rolled the fondant and made the ears. I helped make the two "snakes" for her, but she twisted it into a horn herself, stuck a toothpick in, and later painted it gold. With me supporting the weight of the bag and helping her squeeze she added frosting. Look at this cupcake that she made! She's 4!

I think I'll have an assistant on the next project......
