Josh's 7th Birthday

My nephew Joshua asked me to make him treasure cookies for his 7th birthday. At the time he loved jewels and gems so I wanted to make them fun and sparkly. He requested green, blue, and red.

Red icing failed again :( I had read a tip to mix the red color into the icing and then let it "develop" overnight to make the color "bloom" or some crap like that. So I tried that, and I still had pink. And then I was out of time to go to the store. So he settled for purple.

I iced and flooded the base on all the cookies and let them dry completely. The next day I piped the outline, then I dipped the cookie face down into sprinkles. The sprinkles have two different colors on each cookie.

For the coins I cut out a "7" stencil and used an edible marker to trace each point, then I connected the dots with a No.1 tip. I used gold food coloring in the icing but it wasn't quite gold enough, so I used Wilton gold spray and it gave it a good sheen. I wanted to rough them up a bit so I used black edible powder to age the coins.

I definitely need to practice straight lines with my icing, and someday I will conquer red icing.
