Unicorns, Rainbows, and Farts

My second attempt at free hand icing!
From the moment my mom taught me how to bake I was in love. By the time I was eight I was proudly making chocolate chip cookies all by myself for the whole family (one batch regular, one batch for the raisin lovers. We were a divided house.).

I never made it a priority in my life, but the passion never died.

So I decided I wanted to learn how to take my baking up a few notches, starting with decorated sugar cookies. These guys were fun to make, because who doesn't love unicorns and rainbows?

These cookies are made with Martha Stewart's Sugar Cookie recipe, with an instant royal icing mix that I added water to.

You would think just adding water to it would be easy, right? I was......so wrong. The consistency of the icing is extremely important. This attempt at icing taught me to take my time to get it right. If it's too stiff it won't even come out of the bag. If it's too runny it loses it shape and turns into puddles. You can even see some flecks of purple where parts of the icing mix weren't thoroughly mixed.

The horns and hooves are covered in sprinkles and I'm happy with how those look. I'd like to try using metallic shimmer paints next time.

I made so many discoveries! Excited for the next project.

Consistency of the icing is SO important, you can see how the hair has bled together in the photo above.

For the eyes I used edible markers two ways; drawn on directly (above) and drawing onto a small pearl sprinkle and then adding the pearl to the cookie (below)
Unicorn farts, Charlie!
